Communication

Skype - The Skype application provides chat and VOIP services, VOIP stands for Voice Over Internet Protocol. So what is all this VOIP talk about and why should I care? Well first off, VOIP gives you an alternative to what the Telcos are currently offering, steep prices on monthly phone bills ranging from 40-80 US dollars depending on your cellular plan and contracts, but with VOIP services such as Skype you can expect to only pay 3-5 US dollars per month. VOIP allows consumers to make phone calls to any other PC in the world regardless of distance at no cost, calling landlines or mobiles is currently free until the end of 2006 for Skype within the US. So how much will Skype cost once they start charging for Skypeout after 2006 ends, their current rates for calling outside of the US is a good indicator that the rates after 2006 will be cheap and we shouldn’t have much to worry about, currently calling out of the US will cost roughly 2 cents per minute for worldwide calls.

Skype seems too good to be true, what’s the catch?

VOIP is definitely not for everyone, the downsides, you must have internet access to place a VOIP call. Second VOIP phones are not nearly as mobile as cellular phones, the only time you can make VOIP calls outside of the home is at free wifi hotspots which can be challenging to find depending on where you live, unless you live in the wifi capital city aka San Francisco which has over 300 free wifi hotspots, then yes mobility is an issue to contemplate before purchasing a VOIP capable device such as Mylo. Lastly using a VOIP phone you cannot make calls to 911. Now weighing the pros and cons, the consumers should be able to ask themselves what is most important to them, mobile communication at all times with a higher monthly price tag or little mobility but extremely cheap monthly price.I’ve used the Skype VOIP with friends and family extensively, mainly because I don’t have any other form of communication, prior to receiving the Sony Mylo, I was using the old headphones and mic to place all my Skype calls. My experiences with the Skype VOIP has been excellent thus far. No one could really tell the difference right off the bat, it sounds just like a normal phone should. One of my friends did mention the volume seemed a tad lower than usual, but besides that no one else noticed a thing.

DSC00527.jpgThe Skype main screen isn’t very different from its full sized sibling on desktops. This screen displays contacts, both Skype users and Skypeout numbers. From this screen you can access Tools, Dial, Events, and Chats. Clicking on a contact will give you the following options: Chat, Call, Send Voicemail and Send File. Skype does keep a chat history on each contact, but it only records around 20 chat messages. Lastly Skype allows for Blocked users management, very similiar to Yahoo Messenger’s ignore list.

DSC00536.jpgFrom this menu you can check the majority of your Skype account information, the rest can be accessed through the “Manage Account” button which opens the Opera Browser and takes you to the Skype account management page.

DSC00633.jpgThe events page keeps a record of all incoming, outgoing and missed calls. Also any file transfers will be noted here.

DSC00502.jpg

As you can see the file transfer feature is still intact in this version of Skype. All files received from Skype file transfers will show up in the “drop box” menu item.

DSC00537.jpgSkype chat box displays all the essentials, avatar top left corner and messages separation with time stamps, all three messengers chat screens look the same.

Google Talk - Google talk is a very minimalistic chat application in Mylo. From my experiences so far using Google talk, had no problems, majority of people couldn’t tell I was typing from the Mylo, I got pretty comfortable using the keyboard typing at a decent speed. I’d also like to report Google talk does not have VOIP in this version.

DSC00541.jpgAs you can see there isn’t many options for Gtalk, the phrase “And You Are” is a song title, which displays what song the mylo is currently playing and will show whoever you are chatting with what song you are listening to. Another note I’d like to mention is the right side wifi light blinks when you receive or send messages.

DSC00538.jpgPressing the Gmail menu item will open up the Opera Browser and bring you to the url m.gmail.com which is the mobile version of gmail. The Events works similiar to Skype’s except it doesn’t keep track of calls just messages.

DSC00540.jpgHere you can customize your away message and change your avatar.

Yahoo Messenger - Yahoo Messenger on the desktop can communicate with MSN messenger, but in the Mylo version of Yahoo Messenger that is not possible. Its interesting to see the Yahoo Messenger stealth settings are in this version. Yes yes, Emoticons made it into this version of Yahoo Messenger, cheers!

DSC00545.jpgDSC00546.jpgDSC00542.jpg

DSC00544.jpgDSC00543.jpg

Make sure you erase any “messages” you may regret, you never know when your friend might read through the archive and find his name in there, but of course I’m sure you said all nice things, right?

What’s Up - What’s Up feature is an easy way to check if any of your friends are on IM, it will display IM users from any of the 3 IM clients Skype, Gtalk and Yahoo Messenger.

DSC00522.jpgEven if your friends may have more than one IM name on different clients, there’s no need to create two icons for them, one icon can hold multiple IM names. The icons will be darkened if the person is not online and bright if they are online.

DSC00526.jpgHere you can choose from different avatars and assign them for yourself or your friends. Your friends may not like the IM avatar you chose for them, but its not about them, it’s about what you want, so go ahead and give your friend that Buck-Tooth-Boy avatar.

DSC00521.jpgThe left side will display the picture of the song you are listening to. I don’t know what you are talking about, I have a lot of friends, just because I don’t have a lot of buddy icons doesn’t mean I’m lonely. *runs away in tears*

DSC00525.jpgHere you can add additional IM names aka IDs for your friend and change his/her avatar if you wish. Picture–>Buck-Tooth-Boy avatar–>get a call from friend complaining why his avatar is a Buck-Tooth-Boy, after reading the review, priceless.

Can you view or edit word documents using Gmail on the Sony Mylo? And is Gmail or Gtalk, or both installed in the Sony Mylo, or just one of them?

  2. The mylo cannot view or edit word documents using Gmail. Only Gtalk is installed on the mylo, there is a shortcut found in the Gtalk menu that links to gmail mobile viewed through the Opera Browser.

  3. dominick romano

are there any monthly internet bills and if not how do you connect to the internet at home or on the road?

  4. maurice

is the internet ssid scaner stronger than the one on the psp

  5. Dominick Romano,

An internet connection is needed in order to use the online features of the mylo (Opera Browser, Skype, Gtalk, Yahoo). So if you plan to use the these features in your home then you would need to purchase some form of internet access, DSL or Cable for example. The mylo does not charge any additional bills, but you will need to pay for an internet connection at home.

When you are traveling with the mylo to use it’s online functions you would need to find a wireless access point, also known as Wifi Hotspots. These can be found in public locations such as restaurants, coffee shops, hotels and etc, but keep in mind most do charge for access. Essentially you can use your mylo’s online functions anywhere you have access to a Wifi Hotspot, whether it be at your family friends house or at a hotel, as long as the Wifi Hotspot isn’t locked.

  6. Maurice,

Luckily I do own a PSP as well, from my experience the mylo’s internet ssid scanner is on par with the PSP.

let me know if you have any other questions, thank you for visiting.

  7. maurice

can the mylo just coonect to dsl or would you need a wirrerless router along with it and also can you install programs on the mylo if you can are there any specific ones

  8. Maurice,

The mylo cannot connect to DSL directly, only wireless access points, so you would need a separate wireless router in most cases. Some DSL providers start you with a wireless setup, which includes a wireless router/modem of some sort, so purchasing an additional wireless router in that case would not be necessary.

The mylo does not allow program installation, it’s a real shame I know. So the only possible program changes or additions would come from Sony firmware updates.

  9. Arun

If you look up Sony Mylo in Wikipedia, it says that The Sony Mylo has 1GB flash memory, then in parenthesis, upgradable to 4GB, so does this mean you can upgrade your flash memory to 4GB? It also says that Google is trying to be with AOL, is this true? If the agreement is successful in the future, does that mean, from Gtalk, you can IM AOL/AIM, Screen Names? Also, do know of any new models of the Sony Mylo, and when they are coming out with them?

  10. Arun

Can you send SMS messages using the Sony Mylo, using Yahoo, or Skype?

  11. How is the volume on the speaker? I would like one to use as an mp3 player at work or fishing with my brother but don’t want to use headphones. Can the MP3’s be played through the built in speaker well? I appreciate any comment on this because of all I have read that is the only feature I am looking for in wifi mobile device right now.

  12. Ray

how long does the battery life last using different applications

  13. Arun,

This was a common question, I’ve ran the test and found it wasn’t possible to do SMS on any of the messengers found in the mylo.

  14. igotnotime,

The speaker is very good on the mylo, except for the fact that it’s a mono-speaker, but then again, even if it did have 2 speakers for stereo output, how great could it be, since the gap between the speakers would be no more than 2 inches.

Back to the original question, yes the speakers are pretty loud when compared to the PSP speakers. There is a lot of great wifi devices out there, I’d definitely check out all the alternatives before deciding on the mylo, application wise the mylo can be very limiting.

  15. Ray,

From what I recall through testing, the Sony battery ratings were on target. Here’s the quick run down.

Video playback 8 hours (level 2 brightness setting)

Music 40-45 hours (display is off and music is in ATRAC format, which is a less power hungry music format.)

    Internet Browsing 5-6 hours

Mylo Wifi (screen off) 12 hours

Chatting is about the same as internet browsing 5-6 hours.

Thanks for all the great questions guys, I hope that helps.

  16. MAURICE

can the mylo send text mesages to other mylos through the adhok mode if you can can you tell the range you have to be from the other person to do it

  17. Maurice,

The mylo cannot text message other mylos through adhoc.

  18. maurice

then what can you do on adhoc mode

  19. Maurice,?

Ad Hoc mode is used to share music with other mylo users, the music shared is only streamed not downloaded, so you cannot play music that another mylo user shared with you once they are outside of Wifi range, which is roughly 30 ft.

  20. maurice

so what i heard from you so far i wont be getting a mylo

  21. Maurice,

I’m glad I could help you understand the product fully in order to avoid wasted time/money on a product that you feel does not fit your needs. Thanks for reading the review, take care.

  22. Robert Pogorzelski

Could you please post some screenshots (and/or describe) of how the wireless setup looks like (WEP keys, managing networks etc.).

  23. Robert Pogorzelski

And by the way: do you know if there are any problems with Mac OS?

  24. Whenever you encounter a new Wifi access point the mylo will ask you if you wish to register the Wifi access point, if you select yes, you will be prompted to input the WEP or WPA key if the Wifi access point is encrypted, if there is no encryption the mylo will proceed and connect to the Wifi access point.

In terms of managing networks, there are two main settings, manual and auto connect. When set to manual, turning on Wifi will display a list of registered Wifi access points, from there the user selects which connection he/she wishes to use. With auto, this is all done automatically, after turning on Wifi, the mylo will attempt to connect to the first registered Wifi access point in the list, moving down the list until the mylo is able to obtain a connection. It helps to rearrange the registered Wifi access point list by most frequently to least used, as the mylo does waste much time attempting to connect to each Wifi access point, each attempt can take anywhere from 10-20 seconds, it doesn’t seem like much time, but it does add up.

Unfortunately, the software packaged with the mylo does not support Mac OS. The mylo will act as a USB drive when connected to the Mac OS, so you will still be able to transfer over media to the mylo.

Firmware updates are another issue for Mac users. Normally updates are rather simple to install, grab the file, load software and connect the mylo. There’s two problems the Mac user faces, they can’t run the software to install the update, and the update file itself is in executable form, which the Mac OS cannot run as well.

To solve this problem, first a user needs to obtain the update file in the bin format, this can be obtained by using a windows PC to extract the update file from the executable or visit http://www.myloforums.net which usually post the update file in bin format as a courtesy to Mac users. Once the update file is obtained, connect the mylo to the Mac and transfer the update file to the internal memory of the mylo in the root folder. Disconnect the mylo from the Mac OS, then go into settings and go to update.

Thank you for the questions Robert.

  25. paul clark

hi, id just like to add something.
i have a mylo and for me its fantastic. I agree it can be limiting but it all depends on your circumstances and what you use it for. if you want it for the net and email, if you have a laptop most of the time then you wont need one. if you want it for music and you have an ipod instead, you wont need one. but for me, im currently travelling round the world and its amazing. i bought mine for the uses of email and skype. no matter where i am in the world i can stop and email home or anyone i want. i can easily stop at a coffe shop and have a chat with my mates on skype who are half way round the world (and for free - which is great because trust me, international call costs are not cheap!)it saves carrying a laptop around and does store a reasonable amount of music and photos too. added with a 2gig memory stick duo, its great.

i would recommend it to a person on the go who doesnt have the space to carry a laptop around all the time but needs to stay in touch!

i have only one question for the owner of this site.

there is one thing i cant figure out.

while viewing photos on the mylo, when you click ‘info’ and ‘add to wallpapers’……. what does this do?? i presumed this would allow me to use my pictures as a wallpeper background for my mylo but i cannot figure out how to do this. can you advise…… or at least let me know what this achieves..

    many thanks

    paul

  26. Paul,

Excellent question, I’ve ran into this problem myself while using the mylo. I’ve found that the “add to wallpapers” only works if the picture is at the correct resolution of 320×240, otherwise it will not show up in the wallpaper list.

Additionally, I find it’s much easier to use the mylo software for adding new wallpapers, as the software will auto-resize the images to 320×240 for you.

I appreciate your input on your experience with the mylo, I’m sure many readers will find your personal experience with the mylo to be invaluable. It’s nice to get an opinion from normal people, rather than the people that deal with gadgets on a daily basis, they can become sort of jaded and expect too much, I try to keep this in mind when reviewing products. Once again it’s refreshing to get another perspective on the product.

  27. Jeremy

Hmm…my guess is it sounds like it would be a good choice for me…i have a computer..laptop and all..but i don’t like carrying it around…i pretty much use it for internet, google email, and instant messaging in the first place..and of course mp3’s and photo sharing never hurt :D…I travel alot (USUALLY) within the country..state after state..so this should be a wise investment instead of buying a $500 ipod? because i believe 1 gb itself seems like a decent amount of space…since i usually don’t listen to 250 songs at a time ( more like 20-30) so i can handle what people consider and “inconvience” to put ALL the 5,000 some sonds they have in there mp3 library

  28. kate

well, i have been quite interested in this product.(mylo)
So, i wanted to know if it works with cingular. T-Mobile is to much money so please respond quickly.

    ~Kate~

  29. Kate,

The mylo does not work with GSM networks, so neither T-Mobile or Cingular will work. The mylo uses VOIP technology, which uses internet access to make calls. In order to make calls to landlines and mobiles, Skype credit is required. Please let me know if you have any further questions.

  30. David

Is the mylo compatible with the newer 4gig or 8gig memory stick pro duo’s?

I am currently using the Sony Ericsson W810i phone with a 4gig card and was wondering if I can swap them occasionsly?

    Thank you.

  31. David,

Great question, I can confirm the mylo does support 4GB memory stick pro duo, but have never tried 8GB before. Assuming the mylo doesn’t currently support 8GB memory stick pro duo, I’m quite sure Sony would release a firmware update for the mylo giving it the ability to use 8GB memory stick pro duo at some point in the future.

This is off topic, but I thought you may want to know about this. Recently the Nokia N800 was spotted at Comp USA, which is a product competing with the Sony mylo, so you might want to wait and check out the Nokia N800 before making a decision on the mylo.

  32. Robert Pogorzelski

Thank you for your answers, they were very helpful!

On the subject of Nokia and their “tablets”: there is one problem - they will not support Skype! Their policy is to use floss software only.

  33. Robert,

It’s good to see Nokia supporting the Open Source movement, but at the same time, it can be a real nuisance for some users leaving out proprietary applications like Skype.

Personally, I’d like to see them continue this policy. I don’t really mind the “discomfort” Open Source policies can bring, I feel it’s for the greater good in the long run, so I’m willing to put up with it.

Thanks for pointing that out Robert, that bit of information can make all the difference in the reader’s purchase decision.

Update: It appears Nokia and Skype are in collaboration to release a compatible version of Skype for the Nokia N800, expected to be available for download by mid 2007.

Both in my home and office, i use 802.11g.

my question is, is there some way i can convert my 802.11g into 802.11b for use on a mylo?

  35. Carl,

I can’t know for sure unless you give me the exact model of your wireless router or access point device. Here’s some good news though, the majority of today’s wireless routers/access points provide backwards compatibility for 802.11b devices.

If you know how to access the settings for your wireless router, look for the signal type and select “mixed” if possible, this will send out g/b signals. If you need any help please don’t hesitate to ask any questions I’m here to help.

  36. carl wilson

Comcast installed both my home and office with the cable modems, both wireless modems are Model #WCG200-CC, Comcast Home Networking Wireless-G Cable Gateway, LINKSYS

I am using in both my home and office Apple PowerMacs both running osX v10.3.9.

I would appreciate any help you can offer in how to access the settings for your wireless router.

    Thank you very much.

  37. Junior

Iron Cook, you have been a great help to many people throughout this website. Thank you very much for your reviews and your help.

is there any way we can submit a donation or send some of my grandmother’s cookies as a token of my appreciation.?

  38. Carl,

I have great news for you, your Linksys router (WCG200-CC) does indeed support 802.11b!

Apparently your Linksys router should be set to send a mix of g/b signals by default, according to this thread I came across, check out the last post by Albert.

    Thread here

  39. Junior,

On the horizontal navigation menu near the top on the right side, you’ll find the donation button there. Rest assured, it’s completely secured by Paypal. The amount you wish to donate is totally up to you.

I’ll do my best to keep this site alive and growing, knowing my work has helped someone out there is immensely rewarding. Thank you Junior!

Is there anyway to put an emulator and roms in this?
Is there any games that it supports? like Java?

It sounds like a great device, and personally I carry 3 devices with me at all times, my sony ericsson w810i for music, my cyber-shot camera, and my t-mobile mda. I got the mda recently to use for wifi usage (I’m always near a hotspot at all time of the day) and since i have no ipod or mp3 player, I use my old cell phone the w810 as one.

Getting the mylo could cut me back to just 2 devices: camera and mylo.

But i use the mds as my personal movie/game player. if the mylo can do games, I’m all over it.

p.s. This site rocks. I came across it looking for a mylo review and found it. 2 thumbs up.

  41. John,

Currently there is no way to run emulators on the mylo. I visit myloforums.net frequently to check on hacking progress of the mylo, but it appears to have died out. Since it’s a closed platform, even if the mylo is capable of running java apps, we won’t be able to install any, so yea no games 8(.

It’s really tough to find the right blend of technologies to suit one’s needs. Before going for the mylo, I’d recommend you strongly consider the Apple iPhone, it was announced recently and should be available in June 2007 through Cingular.

The iPhone could replace your W810 as your music player/phone device and your mda for your movie watching needs. iPhone does have a 2MP camera, but I have a bad feeling about the camera. There was little talk concerning the camera, I have a feeling the camera will only be average, so I wouldn’t say it could replace your camera.

On the news section you can find a lot of information regarding the iPhone.

I’m so pleased you enjoyed your experience at my site, I hope to continue creating quality reviews for you guys, it’s a real pleasure.

  42. John

The iphone looks nice but it causes 2 problems with me, one i’m on T-mobile and i’m sure its going to be tough to unlock it for my providers (but you never know) and second (and this is big for me) i need good tactile feedback when texting on a phone. I’m not looking forward to the iphones virtual keyboard.

  43. If you are set on the mylo, I think you’ll be glad to know the price has been lowered, sort of, kind of, heh. One of the members at myloforums reported you could get the mylo for $200, there’s a slight catch you can read about it in the forum.

    Here’s the link

  44. Arun

You know the cheaper way you showed that was on Mylo Forums, well is that card only for like the internet, or could you actually go to a Sony Style store and get the card, and then right after, buy the Sony Mylo for only $200?

  45. Arun

Also, if the Sony Mylo were to ever have Java, would it be possible that they would put it through an Update that you could install to the Sony Mylo?

  46. Arun,

    Good to see you back!

About the $200 mylo, from what I’ve read, I’d assume if you were approved for the Sony Style Visa card then you could purchase the mylo at the store or online and still receive the $150 credit.

About Java, you are correct, Arun. If java were to ever be implemented into the mylo, it would surely be installed via firmware update.

  47. Rob

I’m on an older mac, running os 9. I was wondering if by any chance you know the settings or a good program to put video onto the mylo. I currently own one, just recently bought. and I have a few memory sticks that are 2g and 4g and would love to load them up with my collection if movies.

  48. Rob,

I have some bad news, after some searching I came up empty handed. I did find a great How-To for Mac OS X, but of course that’s useless to you. I was thinking, perhaps the creator of that thread may be more knowledgeable in the area of video encoding on Macs than myself. So here’s what I plan to do, I’m going to start a new thread at that forum stating your question you asked here.

Here’s the link to the thread I created at the forum. Let’s hope we get some answers fast, I’d hate to see the 2gb and 4gb memory sticks go to waste 8).

  49. David

I could be wrong on this but won’t it work on os M?

  50. David

I meant os 9. Damn crackberry put an M.

  51. David,

Good point David, the thought did cross my mind, but I’m not sure if OS X applications are compatible with OS 9.

“I meant os 9. Damn crackberry put an M.”

    hehe

  52. Rob

just bought a used powerbook running os X, all for the love of my mylo.

    downloaded isquint now.

  53. Rob,

I think that’s great you purchased a powerbook, here’s a great mylo video encoding guide I found for Mac users (OS X).

    I hope this helps!

Enjoy the mylo and thanks for reading 8).

  54. Jose

I recently just purchases a K800i out in Europe. I’m having it unlocked as I speak so that it will work with my T-mobile sim. One question though, my M2 memory stick comes with a pro duo adapter, once i start taking pictures with the phone, am I able to put the M2 card using the adapter into my mylo and view the pictures on that?

If so, will I be able to attach pictures into the emails I write using the Mylo?

  55. Jose,

I’ve read in the myloforums of another person trying to do this, and his results weren’t so hot. Some of his pictures would display while others would not. There probably is some restriction on resolution size of the picture. I’d recommend using the lowest resolution setting on your camera when taking pictures, which will most likely be 640×480 resolution. This should show up on the mylo, anything above that I can’t confirm.

The mylo doesn’t allow any file attachments for emails, which is a real big let down. The only way I know of to get files sent through the mylo is via Skype, but that’s also a drag because the person receiving the file has to be online on Skype and ready to accept the file as it’s being sent.

On a side note, I found it interesting that your K800 came with a pro duo adapter while the American version (K790a) comes with a regular sized memory stick adapter. That’s odd.

  56. Jose

I got mine through VodaFone out in London. Came with a 512mb card and pro duo adapter. I ended up buying a 1g card because I use it to take lots and lots of pictures.

  57. Joel

True, I have to agree with you that its odd, but I’m also saying that what Jose is saying is true.

I went out to the UK about 4 weeks ago and also picked one up from VodaFone with Pay As You Talk. It came with a pro duo adapter.

  58. Joel

What do you do with all these great gadgets once your through with them?

I’d be more than glad to take them off your hands.

  59. Joel,

I usually hang onto the gadgets for a while, and sell them off on eBay, once I get tired of them. The value in the products drop a lot when they are sold on eBay, but it’s better than nothing.

  60. Joel

Hell, forget Ebay, email me and I’ll send you a good amount of cash if they aren’t too banged up.

  61. Joel,

I appreciate the offer, but I’d rather not get involved in that sort of thing. I have a feeling if I started making those sorts of deals, I’d only be asking to get mobbed by Nigerian scammers.

    Helo Cook,

I was very impresed with your re-view! I need yuor help Cook. My nefew in Nigera is very ill, the docator said he needs a new mylo as son as possible, or he wil die. I will pay you $1,000 USD for the mylo, once you ship and give me UPS tracking number I will transsfer funds thruogh paypal. Please respond as son as possible.

    Sincerely Yours,
    Nigerian Scammer

  62. Joel

man do I get a lot of those.

  63. Arun

Man, I read the other review, and I’ve come up with this, the Sony Mylo is a device with a whole lot of half-baked ideas into one. I bet you that if Sony sold them for $250, instead of $350, it would sell a lot, I would’ve probably bought it. If I ever get the chance to though, I’ll buy it, try it out, if it ends up working how I’d like, I’ll keep it, if not, I’ll just return and get my money back and buy the next model.

  64. Joel

Just ordered mine today. Damn, i can’t wait until it comes in.

  65. Joel,

That’s great Joel! Please drop by when you have time and share with me your first impressions of the mylo.

  66. Joel

sure, no problem, they said i would have it within 5-6 business days so i’m hoping to have it before the next weekend.

  67. Joel

Hey Cook, I’ve got a question, I still haven’t received the Mylo yet but I’m using an older mac (until i can afford a nice new macbook pro) and I was wondering if there was going to be any problems using the mylo uder “MSC” to have the device operate similar to a flash drive?

I just want to load a few movies, some music and some pictures.

I understand that the Sony Mylo is not Mac compatable and that syncing contact and other info requires Sony’s Windows-only SonicStage software for and is not supported by PocketMac or Missing Sync but is it still possible to add my own pictures and such?

  68. Joel,

There’s no ability to sync contacts for either Windows or Mac, so you won’t be missing out on anything in that respect.

As to photos, the software for windows automatically resizes photos to the correct resolution of 320×240, in the Mac user’s case it will only require you to simply resize the images yourself and then transfer the image via drag-drop method to the mylo’s flash memory.

When it comes to videos both windows and mac users need to do some transcoding before videos can be played correctly on the mylo. In your case you’ll wish to follow this Mac mylo video encoding guide.

  69. David

went out and bought myself a mylo. so far all ive done is browse a few sites. its ok. the keypad sucks though. ive used all kinds of devices, from blackberries to treos to the almighty sidekick and everything i can think of seems to be better than this devices keypad

  70. David,

Hang on to that receipt it may come in handy 8).

  71. David

Naw, I’ll be keeping it, it can come in handly, i’m just sad it doesnt have a better keypad.

I’m going to be using isquint to transcode the videos, would i still follow the directions from that link you posted for mac video guide?

  72. David,

The settings used in FFmpegX and PSP Video9 should be similar to isquint.

    320×240 resolution
    Simple Profile Mpeg-4 Format
Bitrate (you can play around with this and see what works best for you)

The only setting that I could see becoming an issue is the MPEG-4 profile used, iPod uses AVC profile while mylo uses Simple profile for it’s MPEG-4 videos. As long as isquint allows you to control which profile is used, then you should have no problems. I wish you the best of luck, I wish I could help you more, but I’m on a PC 8(.

  73. David

What folder do I put videos in? I’ve tried loading videos into the mylo but none show up.

  74. David

Thanks for your help. everything has been so useful. THANK YOU SO MUCH!

  75. David,

Try placing the videos in X:\MP_ROOT\100MNV01

The X drive represents the mylo’s memory stick or internal memory which ever you prefer to use.

Finally make sure the video file is named correctly, it needs to follow this name scheme, M4VXXXXX

The X’s represent numbers it can be what ever numbers you wish to use, just make sure its 5 digits long.

I’m happy to help David, thanks for dropping by, don’t hestitate to ask questions if you run into any problems.

  76. Doug

Does this appliance only limit its use to a wireless connection to the internet? Can a ethernet cable be used if wireless options are not available?

  77. Doug,

You are correct Doug, the Sony mylo can only use WiFi to connect to the internet. If you have any other questions I’d be happy to help ya! Take care Doug.

  78. Lea

i got my mylo 2 weeks ago and i loveeeeee it
instead of using my laptop while on bed i can use it instead, small and light…but one thing hope sony could add in the future is a backlight in its keyboard, i love to lay on my bed with lights off, and play with my mylo (chat and email), as like other qwerty pda have, aside from that mylo rocks!!!….iron cook..do i need to to dl the firmware

  79. Lea,

I don’t think you have much to lose by updating your mylo’s firmware to the latest version, which I believe is 1.300. I say there isn’t much to lose because the hacking community revolving around the Sony mylo isn’t really alive, compared to the homebrew community of the Sony PSP. The benefits of updates are very vague, from the logs I’ve read they leave most of the specifics out. The only real advantage I can see in updating to the latest firmware is working out some of the bugs found in the mylo. Follow the link below to obtain the firmware update file.

    http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-download.pl?mdl=COM1&upd_id=2507&os_id=99

Then use the software provided with the Sony mylo to run the update. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to ask, I”m glad you are enjoying your Sony mylo take care Lea!

  80. Lea

    iron
got a problem with my mylo it keep hanging and stuck up twice now..i keep turning it off but same problem unless i did remove the batt and wait for couple of seconds, maybe ill upgrade the firware right?

  81. Lea,

Upgrade the firmware and let me know of the problem persist, *crosses fingers*.

  82. Lea

by the way…whats up with the T-Mobile activation that goes with it?

  83. About the 1-Year Free T-mobile hotspot access, according to their mylo page it only requires the mylo’s firmware to be updated in order to use it. Activation occurs once you access a T-mobile hotspot for the first time.

A direct link to the site where I obtained the T-mobile hotspot deal info.

    http://www.learningcenter.sony.us/assets/itpd/mylo/prod/index.html

The site will play a short flash video, you can skip it by clicking skip in the top right corner.

Click on News & Partners found on the left side navigation menu. Then a list of partners will be shown horizontally, click on T-mobile, scroll down to the bottom of the T-mobile page, the other stuff is mostly marketing hype, the important details are found in the last paragraph.

  84. Lea

    hi iron,

i already upgrade the firmware, hope it wont stop again from working

i got a question, i just brought a 1 gig memory stick duo and i add some video on it, but everytime i try to open it on my mylo on video folder it says “no video on ms duo”?

  85. Lea,

Getting videos to play on the mylo can be some what tricky. The mylo requires videos to be formatted in a specific way, once in the correct format, the videos need to be placed in the correct folder as well.

To convert videos and loading them into the mylo, detailed instructions are in my guide, link below.

    http://spicygadget.com/2006/11/20/guide-encoding-videos-for-the-sony-mylo/

The software required to convert videos is 100% free so no worries.

  86. Lea

where is the right folder?….even i put pictures on my memory stick still i cant view it unless i transfer it in internal memory

  87. Once you’ve encoded the videos, you’ll want to place them in X:\MP_ROOT\100MNV01

The X is the letter of your external memory stick drive. This is assuming you’ve already encoding the videos to the correct format, otherwise the video will not play. Most likely the folder X:\MP_ROOT\100MNV01 will not exist yet, so you’ll need to create it.

Pictures go into X:\PICTURE folder, where X stands for the letter of your memory stick drive. The images will not show unless they are in the correct resolution of 320×240. If your image isn’t in the correct resolution you’ll need to resize them using an photo editting application.

You can also try using the mylo software to resize your images, when images are transferred to the mylo, it’s automatically resized to 320×240 resolution. Then you could simply drag the images from your internal memory and drop them into your external memory stick.

I’m sorry the whole process is such a big hassle, let me know if you have any issues, I’ll be glad to help!

  88. Lea

    hi iron

i already figure out bout the picture…just having some trouble with the video but i guess ill figure it out in no time….anyway those video i got was already converted i use also videora and put it on my ipod…do i still need to convert it for mylo?

  89. Lea

and also…i got plans of buying the nokia n800 internet tablet…is it good than mylo or just the same? can i also use yahoo messenger on it? bec as what the guy says from data vision hes not sure about it…and is there also skype from it?…

  90. Lea,

The iPod uses a slightly different video format from the mylo, they both use Mpeg4, the key difference is, iPod uses AVC profile, while the mylo uses SP (Simple Profile). So in order to play those videos, you’ll still need to convert them again for the mylo 8(.

About the mylo and N800 comparison. I felt that the hardware keyboard was much more comfortable to use for extended periods of chatting on the mylo, as opposed to chatting with the touchscreen keyboard of the N800. Web browsing is spectacular on the N800, the mylo doesn’t really compare to the N800 in this aspect. These are just a few off the top of my head.

Out of the box you won’t be able to chat on Yahoo Messenger. I haven’t kept up to date with the Nokia N800 scene, but from what I’ve heard Gaim, similar to Trillian, lets you use multiple IM clients, was expected to be imported from the previous Tablet OS 2006 to 2007.

Nokia and Skype announced they were developing a Nokia N800 friendly version of Skype said to be available for download in the Summer of 2007.

  91. Varun

Can one read PDF documents in any way using the mylo?

  92. Varun,

Afraid not, the only document I know of that the mylo can load is simple text files 8(.

  93. Lea

    iron,

i already figure out how to encode and transfer video on my mylo…problem is when i already play it, its says “cannot play file…file is damaged”…even the new video i download and encode still wont work….this is already sucks

  94. Lea,

This may be a long shot, but it’s worth a try. Video encoding is a CPU intensive process, you’ll notice when encoding videos your CPU will be at 100% use until the encoding is complete. If you are multitasking while encoding videos, this could cause errors in the video encoding. If this is in fact the source of the problem, you could try encoding the video and not use the computer for any other task until the video encoding has completed. I hope this solves the problem, otherwise it could be something more serious causing the issue.

  95. Lea

i do nothing while encoding the video…i prolly just leave it and come back in a while, bec i cant just wait in front of it make me bored actually….so i dont know what the heck the problem is hahahaha…mylo getting me crazy now..i just end up using ipod again, hahahaha…wonder if they can put camera on it in the future is will be much better…like n800..cant really find a gadget that is all in one…and a light on a keyboard plsssssss hahaha

  96. Lea,

I agree it’s tough to find an all-in-one portable device that does everything I want. There is one device I’ve been eyeing ever since it’s release, the Sony UX series. They are powerful enough to run Windows Vista, not some watered down mobile OS we usually see in portables. So all of our favorite applications can be run, assuming they don’t demand too much CPU/RAM to run. The Sony UX series has lit-keyboard keys just what you asked for, an awesome screen, extremely sharp, tons of other dodads, but the device is not really pocketable and the sucker is out of my price range, 2K USD.

I’ve thought of another way to troubleshoot your Sony mylo video woes. I want to try to narrow down the problem. I could provide you with a short video clip that I’m positive works on the mylo. Then I’ll leave it up to you to place the video into the correct folder and try to play the video. By doing this we can learn…

    A. If the video plays, then we know it’s a video encoding issue.

    B. If the video does not play, the video must have been placed in the incorrect folder.

If you are willing to give this a shot, please let me know, so I have permission to send you the short video clip via e-mail.

  97. Lea

yes sure please send me the clips so we can find out whats the problem…ya can see my email right?

about the gadget ya saying yes its cool…but too big…i rather use my laptop…and its expensive…

  98. Lea

    hi iron

i got the clip that you send me and put it in the exact right folder…but it says “unsupported files”

  99. Lea,

Sorry about the late reply, perhaps this was an encoding error on my part. Let me double check the file and get back to you.

  100. Lea,

Ok I found a list of movie trailers that have been converted to a Sony mylo compatible format. Give these movie trailers a try and let me know how it goes. *crosses fingers*

    http://myloforums.net/forums/showthread.php?t=919

  101. Lea

    hi iron

i went to the site you gave me and download the video clips but i still encounter the same problem “unsupported files”
    this really sucks!

  102. Lea,

I’d like to try and investigate this problem further. What I’d like to obtain from you is a few desktop screenshots, so I can examine the folder structure and drive letters to double check everything. If you are ok with this, please send the screenshots to my e-mail at ironcook@spicygadget.com

    Instructions
    1. Connect your Sony mylo to your computer using the USB cable.

    2. Click on windows Start button, then left-click on “My Computer”. Take a screenshot of that window by pressing “Print Screen” on your keyboard.

    3. Open your paint program it should be found in Start>All Programs>Accessories>Paint

    4. Once the program is open, press Ctrl+V on the keyboard to paste the screenshot, then go to file menu and “save as…” name the file to what ever you feel is appropriate and place it so where you can easily access it such as your desktop.

That first screenshot shows me which drive letter your mylo is using. The second screenshot I’d like to see is the folder where you placed the videos in the mylo.

  103. Lea

    iron,

    picture sent!

  104. Lea,

I replied to your email with some recommendations I hope you received it.

    I hope this works!

  105. First of all, thanks for your help, man.

So I just got one today, at the school’s bookstore; I have 10 days to return it for a full refund. I wanted to test drive it good before I made a final decision. So far, so good, but the only thing- which is huge, is that I can’t log in to any of my email accounts, hotmail, gmail, etc… it says that it is “unable to complete secure transaction”. Can the mylo not access email services or is this have to do with my router settings? Checking my email and sending out messages as email is one of the primary reasons I got this. I mean, it’s enough trying to not thing about the fact that it doesnt have MSN Messenger… by the way, will they ever make an upgrade for this?

Thanks a lot, man. Your forum is great!

  106. Baan,

I’m positive the mylo should work with gmail, I’ve tried it with both gmail normal and mobile version. About hotmail I’ve never tested so I have no idea if that works or not. I’m rather dumbfounded as to why the email access wouldn’t work. Open the mylo’s web browser and plug in this address http://m.gmail.com

That URL should send your mylo’s browser directly to the mobile version of Gmail. I know you only have a 10 day trial so please let me know asap if this works or not. Also try using another internet connection besides your home, I’m just curious, I don’t suspect that it would be your internet connection, but better to check instead of wonder.

    Good luck Baan!

  107. Hello IC!

Went on the website you gave and it is still giving me the “Unable to complete secure transaction” message. I’m yet to try it at a different internet connection; in any case, it wouldn’t be any good if I can’t use it at my house.

On the other hand, I didn’t know there was mobile versions of websites like gmail. Is there one for hotmail that you know of?

Thanks a lot for your help and prompt response.

    Baan

  108. I did some sniffing around in the mylo forums I frequently read. I found that you are not alone in this issue. The first post gives us some insight that it may be a firmware issue, as the writer said the issue cropped up after he upgraded his firmware on the mylo.

    http://myloforums.net/forums/showthread.php?p=3728

The second post said he was able to load gmail after he took his battery out and put it back in. By taking the battery out, the mylo does a complete system restart, whenever you turn off the mylo via power switch, it’s only put into sleep mode. So try doing a complete system restart on your mylo then try accessing your email accounts.

    http://www.myloforums.net/forums/showthread.php?t=213

get back to me soon on your progress.

One last thing, if you haven’t updated your firmware to the latest version please do so, this may solve your problems.

  109. Baan

    Dear IC,

Where Can I get the Firmware update?

    Thank u.

  110. Lea

    hi iron

    sorry for the late reply

i did what youve said and put it on my internal memory (the video)..but it still says “unsupported files”

  111. Arun

Hey! You’ve been listed as one of the references on the on Wikipedia for the Sony Mylo! d:P

  112. Arun,

That’s great 8) thanks for pointing that out Arun, I didn’t notice.

  113. Lea,

Are you still having problems with getting videos on your mylo?

  114. Lea

    hi iron

yup, its still now working…both on internal and external memory

  115. Lea

im sorry i mean STILL NOT working

  116. Lea,

I can’t really think of any other ways to solve the issue, so I’m going to direct you to the sony mylo forum. The forum section I’m directing you to is focused on getting music/videos onto the mylo, so hopefully one of these guys is aware of something I’m not, so we can get this problem solved for you. Here’s a direct link to the forum section you want to post your issue, registering for this forum is very fast and easy.

    http://myloforums.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=13

  117. I know that I read mylo has full html capabilities but what else does the web browser support. Does mylo employ opera 8 web browser and support plug-ins, javascript or flash 7, or does it let you watch videos from such sites as youtube and google video and keep web pages true to the form while optimizing it for the device. Also does it have an rss feed reader onboard that can pull the latest headlines from various news sources at user-defined intervals?

  118. James,

Out of all of the features you mentioned the mylo is capable of none. On the bright side everything you mentioned the Nokia N800 is capable of, except for the Google and Youtube videos, it can only perform marginally in that aspect. I did a full review on that product a while back, here’s a link to it

    Nokia N800 Review

  119. Arun

Hey, um does the Sony Mylo have a feature of recording sound or something like that, because on this wallpaper… http://www.mobilewhack.com/images/SONY-MYLO.jpg, you can see that on the White Mylo’s screen, on the menu, there is a “Voice Memo” choice, I just wanted to know if that was true, or false advirtisement or something.

  120. Arun

Sorry, I accidently put a comma after the URL, here… http://www.mobilewhack.com/images/SONY-MYLO.jpg

  121. Don H

I just bought a used Mylo on Ebay. Before I bought it I called Sony Mylo Support and they asured me I could send and receive HOTMAIL. The upshot is I can not access my EBAY, Hotmail, Website Email, Stock Broker account or any other account that has a password. They all give “Unable to complete Secure transaction”. Another call to SONY verified this. They said that secure websites need JAVA, which the Mylo does not have.I certainly hope they provide an upgrade in the near future to solve this problem. What good is one year of free T-Mobile WiFi if you can’t check your email.

  122. Don,

Sorry to hear about your problems. But on the other hand, I’m glad you shared your issues, you’ll probably save a lot other people out there the trouble you went through.

The only solution that I could think of is possibly using e-mail forwarding. Perhaps you could use a single gmail account and have all your other email services send copies to the gmail account automatically. Then you could use your mylo to access your gmail account. I’m pretty sure the mobile version of gmail should work with the mylo. Well I hope this solution helps solve part of your problems.

  123. Don H

I did some further investigation today. The MYLO can not access Google Mail. It gives the same error message. The only email it can get is YAHOO. Period. I will be writing 6 letters on monday to various officers of SONY to see if they will provide software to enable JAVA.
Sony is also not providing the Image Converter 2 software to load video to the MYLO.
I actually like the unit but wonder why SONY is not supporting it.

  124. Don H

After 6 phone calls to SONY, I finally have the answer. The time/date settings must be set using a “24 hour clock”. Java has nothing to do with it. Everything now works.

  125. Iron Cook

    Don,

Don that is a really big catch you made there. Your issue isn’t the first I’ve heard of, lots of other users had the same issue as you, but no one really knew the solution to the issue. I’ll do my best to spread the word. I’m going to make a post about the issue and the solution you gave at myloforums.net and also my forum as well, I’ll make a tech support section in the forum. Great work Don!

  126. Iron Cook

    Arun,

I didn’t see your comment, I just now noticed it, my apologies. When I tested the mylo I didn’t see any voice memo feature at all. But I don’t think it would be out of the mylo’s scope of capabilities, since it has a built in microphone, so I don’t see why it couldn’t be possible. Perhaps they’ll add this feature in a future firmware upgrade, or they might save it for “mylo 2″. Good to see ya Arun.

  127. Man

Hi and thanks for good info.

Was on my way to buy a Mylo second hand. (I live in Europe)
While browsing for information I found the Nokia N800.
N800 looks less plastic and supports Flash, 9 with latest update.
Can you give any argument, part from price, I still should go for Mylo?

    Thanks, Man

  128. Iron Cook

    Man,

The only thing Sony Mylo has going for it is the thumb-keyboard, besides that I really feel the Nokia N800 has much more to offer. When the Sony mylo was first released, it was great at the time, nothing else in the market quite matched it, but now that the Nokia N800 is on the market, it’s really hard to find reasons to purchase a Sony Mylo over a Nokia N800. The Flash 9 support is so sweet! Thanks for dropping by Man, take care!

  129. Derek

Is it worth the $350 price tag?

  130. Iron Cook

    Derek,

I’m glad you asked, it’s been quite some time since the writing of the Mylo review and a lot of things have changed since then. A big competitor to the Sony Mylo is the Nokia N800, which practically does everything the mylo does, but better and it only cost $50 more than the mylo. The Nokia N800 is able to visit Flash 9 websites, so that means you’ll be able to watch streaming videos at sites like YouTube. I wrote up a full review on the N800 here.

    Nokia N800 Review

If you have any other questions please let me know, thanks for dropping by Derek, take care!

  131. Derek

    super fast reply!

can u link me to a page that shows the exact size of the nokia?

  132. Iron Cook

    Derek,

At the end of the first page of the Nokia N800 review shows size comparison images to give you a rough idea of the actual size of the product.

If you were referring to exact size from numbers, here’s the figures

    2.95 x 5.67 x 0.51 inches (75 x 144 x 13 mm) and weighs 7.27 ounces (206 g).

    I’m glad I could help 8).

  133. Derek

its kinda expensive (teh nokia)… I dont think ill buy that. i just found out that at the sonystyle store, it lowered to $299 usd… is it worth it? or shu8ld i jsut get this: http://surprisinggift.com/p168/2GB-MP4-AVI-Watch-Video-MP3-Player-Recorder-AT05/product_info.html

Im not travelling the world or anything, and im 12, so i dont have many uses for the mylo, but it will be still cool to own i guess

    whats your opinion?

  134. Iron Cook

    Derek,

All three products are interesting; the multimedia watch, Nokia N800 and Sony Mylo. What to buy really depends on what your needs/wants are and how you plan to use the device. If you could describe what features you want and how you plan to use the device on a daily basis that would help greatly.

  135. Derek

um… i watch a lot of videos, i have a lot of friends on skype and msn, i listen to a lot of songs, i DONT have much money… i have a psp that can do a lot of stuff, but im looking for something more portable

    thanks again,
    derek

  136. Iron Cook

    Derek,

That helps a lot, I’d definitely recommend the Sony Mylo over the other two products based on what you’ve said. Although Skype is on both Mylo and the N800, on the mylo you can IM with the thumb keyboard, which is less difficult than typing with the touchscreen keyboard on the N800.

You also mentioned you want something more portable, the Mylo is much smaller than the N800, the N800 is about the size of a PSP.

Both the N800 and Mylo can play videos well. The Mylo is somewhat strict about what video formats it will accept, the N800 is more lax in this area.

About music playback, the N800 has much better loud speakers than the mylo. The mylo speakers crackle at high volumes. There is also an issue with the mylo headphones you should be aware of, there is no 3.5mm jack for normal headphones, you have to use the adapter Sony provides for 3.5mm headphones.

The only features I see in the multimedia watch working in it’s favor is the music playback and the fact that it’s very portable.

  137. Derek

lol. a bit too portable with that tiny screen. no problem with the mpeg 4 format, i have some freeware thats on my comp that encodes vids for my psp :P. So ill get a mylo… when i make enuf money :P

  138. Derek

can the sony mylo use the sony location free player?

  139. Iron Cook

    Derek,

    I’m afraid not 8(

  140. Derek

    k. you knwo the orange button on teh right? is it possible to paint it black?

  141. Iron Cook

    Derek,

lol, I wish I could answer that, I honestly do not know. You might want to ask the forum member named MorphAlex, I’ve spoken with him on a few occasions and he does a lot of paint work on his laptops.

    k. can you give me your msn so i can ask stuff about the mylo without always refreshing the page?

  143. Iron Cook

    Derek,

Sure you can contact me through my Skype SN, Ironcell. I’m about to head out right now, so I’ll get back to you as soon as I can.

Hello for the first time Iron!
FIrty, thank you very much to provide us all info concerning mylo.
Man I ask you 2 questions?
1 - I have a intel macbook and I want to shares its internet via AirPort to the mylo. Well, mylo can list the connection, then I type the password and click in connect, but mylo shows up “faied to connect to selected Wireless Network” message. Do you know what to do?
2 - Since I’m living in Japan, I would like to buy another mylo, but although the mylo hardware (I’m talking about the keyboard) is in english, the system is in japanese. So. I’m not japanese and need the english version. Do you know if I can replace the japanese system by an english version? If yes, you know how to get this english version? Or man I use the mylo CDs from the first english mylo i have already bought?
    Very thank you in advance.

    Iron Cook,

Does the Mylo allow you to access Google Docs or Livejournal.

Livejournal is less image intensive than MySpace, but it does require a log-in and I had heard the Mylo had problems with those.

    Thanks.

    Shadow,

I was unable to access google docs when testing the mylo, about the livejournal I am unsure of. The reason google docs didn’t work was because of the ajax, which mylo cannot handle. Thanks for dropping by, take care!

    Hello sir,

Is MYLO better than PSP? What are the advantages and disadvantages of the MYLO compared to the PSP? Thank you.

    Ian

    Ian,

Both devices are good, but comparing the two would be more of an apple and oranges comparison, so I’m going to stay away from saying one is better than the other. I think we’d be better off finding out what you personally want in your next mobile gadget.

If you could describe what features in a mobile gadget you find most important that would be a great start.

    hey,
i was wondering if you can access AIM from third party websites such as ebuddy or airaim.com
because i was going to ask for the Mylo for Christmas but if it isn’t able to access AIM it would not be necessary.

    Thank you

    Chris,

I do recall being able to access ebuddy, but I wasn’t too impressed with the usability. To see if you received a message during a chat you’d have to keep refreshing the page, and even your message you sent wouldn’t show up until the page refreshed. I didn’t try airaim so I don’t know if that works or how well it works if it does.

I originally hoped Sony would give the mylo updates to give users more freedom, but many months have passed and I haven’t seen a significant improvement in the mylo’s functionality, so I don’t think AIM support will come anytime soon (I hope I’m dead wrong).

    Take care Chris!

    Iron Cook,

In Gmail’s latest Update of gmail 2.0 (being rolled out to select people, and eventually everyone right now) someone found code in the gtalk online chat that suggests Google will include Transports to contact members of AIM, and possibly others. If they do this, it may not require an update on the end of the MYLO, but they could update it and have sony release a new firmware with their updated
